Amazon Australia’s commitment and ongoing investment to faster delivery times comes as new report shows Australian consumers save millions thanks to fast delivery
AUSTRALIA – 28 August, 2024 - Amazon Australia has today announced the launch of its Prime Free One-Day Delivery service in the Blue Mountains, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Mornington Peninsula and the Sunshine Coast. Prime members in these locations can now order as late as midnight for next-day delivery on eligible orders with no minimum spend, making it even more convenient to shop on Amazon.com.au.
More than one million products across categories including everyday essentials, electronics, home and kitchen, beauty, video games, books, toys, clothes, shoes are now eligible for Prime Free One-Day Delivery. Eligible items can be easily identified by Prime members shopping in the Amazon App or at Amazon.com.au via the ‘Prime FREE One-Day’ or ‘Prime One-Day’ icons on product detail pages.
Janet Menzies, Country Manager for Amazon Australia, said, “We are committed to getting faster for our customers and now the majority of Prime members across the country can rely on next-day delivery on more than one million items, and can receive items as fast as the same day in Sydney. We are proud to now be able to offer Prime members in the Blue Mountains, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Mornington Peninsula and the Sunshine Coast access to Prime Free One-Day Delivery building on a service that Prime members in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane have been enjoying.”
Amazon Australia aims to continue expanding product selection and delivery areas eligible for Prime Free One-Day and Same-Day Delivery to provide more Prime members faster access to even more products, and Prime members outside of eligible postcodes can still benefit from free delivery in as fast as two days on eligible orders.
A new report from Mandala Partners, commissioned by Amazon Australia, looked at the benefits of fast delivery of retail products to Australian consumers and found that, in the last ten years, faster delivery times are estimated to have provided almost $350 million of value to consumers through improved convenience and time-saved. Online retail is driving intense competition in Australia when it comes to faster delivery options, and a previous report from Mandala estimated that households have saved nearly $3,500 since 2019 thanks to the price-lowering effects of online channels.
Prime is Amazon’s membership program providing savings, convenience, and entertainment in one single membership. Customers who have not tried Prime can sign up for a 30-day free trial at amazon.com.au/prime to access the many year-round benefits. From day one of membership, members in eligible postcodes will have access to free delivery on millions of local and international Prime eligible items, with Free One-Day Delivery on eligible orders now available for Prime members in the Blue Mountains, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Mornington Peninsula and the Sunshine Coast. These locations are the latest to access this benefit, with Brisbane, Newcastle, Gosford, Wollongong and Geelong rolled out earlier this year, joining Sydney and Melbourne. This also follows the announcement that Prime members in Sydney will for the first-time access Free Same-Day Delivery on eligible orders. These delivery benefits are in addition to access to Amazon Original series and films on Prime Video such as Fallout, Road House, The Boys S1-4, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power S2 (launching on Prime Video August 29), The Idea of You, I Am: Celine Dion and Australian Amazon Original series; The Test S1-3, Deadloch, The Lost Flowers of Alice Hart and upcoming series The Office and The Narrow Road to the Deep North alongside other popular movies and TV shows as well as access to 100 million songs ad-free in shuffle mode with Amazon Music Prime and more.
Amazon’s continued investment in Australia for customers and sellers
Amazon Australia continues to grow and invest in its operations network to enable a faster, seamless, and reliable shopping experience for customers across the country, building its operational sites close to where its customers live and work. Amazon Australia now has six fulfilment centres, and 12 logistics sites including delivery stations in Bella Vista, NSW; Arundel and Heathwood, QLD; and Mulgrave, VIC.
Earlier this year, the business confirmed its continued commitment to its Australian operations, announcing plans to invest $1.6 billion opening five new operational sites by 2026, which will create an additional 4,500 jobs once fully operational.
Amazon Australia’s delivery capacity increased by almost 50% in 2023 and Amazon Australia added 600 permanent roles to its operations network, with even more Amazon customers around Australia now able to access an enhanced delivery experience. This includes faster delivery, delivery on evenings and weekends, and reattempted deliveries for customers when they are not home.
The expansion of Prime Free One-Day Delivery enables selling partners to get their products to more customers fast. Fulfilment by Amazon (FBA) is a fulfilment method available for sellers on Amazon.com.au, built to enable third-party sellers to make the most of Amazon's advanced logistics network. FBA Sellers just need to send their product to one of Amazon’s fulfilment centres, and Amazon then stores, picks, packs, and ships the FBA seller’s order to customers. Amazon also takes care of customer service issues and handles any returns or refunds on behalf of the seller. All products enrolled into FBA are eligible for Prime delivery, meaning that selling partners with products enrolled into the program will see their products delivered to Prime members in the eligible postcodes in the Blue Mountains, Canberra, the Gold Coast, Mornington Peninsula and the Sunshine Coast the next day, with no minimum spend.
According to Mandala Partners’ report, businesses are estimated to have gained $1.4 billion in sales revenue from faster Business-to-Customer deliveries over the last decade. This, combined with the potential to save an estimated $400 million through swifter access to inventory, means Australian businesses stand to unlock $1.8 billion of value thanks to fast delivery, the report suggests.
Majid Ali, owner of Canberra-based business Posh Majestic, said, “We have been selling on Amazon for two years and it’s been a fantastic experience. Amazon’s delivery network has allowed us to grow our business and reach an entirely new customer base across Australia and the globe.”
“We know delivery speed is important to our customers, so we are very excited about the arrival of Prime Free One-Day Delivery in Canberra, which will allow us to get our anti-fatigue floor mats to locals even faster.”
